In response to the Legislative Auditor’s report on worker misclassification, Minnesota AFL-CIO President Bernie Burnham made the following statement:
“The Legislative Auditor’s report confirms what countless workers have been saying for years – a growing number of employers are illegally misclassifying employees as independent contractors.
“Misclassification fraud denies working people key protections like the right to collectively bargain, overtime pay, workers compensation coverage, health benefits, earned sick and safe time, and future access to paid family & medical leave.
“Lawmakers can act right now and pass Sen. Clare Oumou Verbeten and Rep. Emma Greenman’s legislation backed by Attorney General Keith Ellison to strengthen and streamline enforcement of our worker misclassification laws and allow workers to seek restitution.”
